The story about the freaking Opossum

wiki

10 years ago I had a situation with a Opossum. I was letting my dog out in the backyard at night and while waiting for him to do his business I hear a small ruffling noise near the entrance to our basement. Naturally I thought it was our neighbor's cat but as I stepped further all I saw was a GIANT looking rodent. Now, my fear of rodents actually dates back to about 22 years ago when I was about 5. I was chased by a huge rat in our apartment when we lived in Chicago. It was not uncommon to have rodents or roaches when you lived in the inner city. Anyway, since that occurred when I was 5 I have been forever traumatized about rodents. I think mice and rats are EWWW..seriously..I just jump whenever I see one.

When I lived in NYC we had a huge mouse problem in our apartment. There was more than one occasion when I would hear a mouse rummaging in my garbage can near my head. (my head!). Anyway, I digress.. so back to the Opossum story.

We couldn't find the Opossum that went into our house. It seriously took several days to find it and I knew it was in still in the house because I would see droppings on our basement kitchen counter. Of course I did not sleep a wink those several days because I was too paranoid the Opossum would come crawling on my bed. Omg..just the thought makes me squeal. We eventually found the Opossum and my ex-stepfather killed it. Opossum is gone. Whew..life is good.

3 years after that... I come home from college one weekend and my mom put a stuffed Opossum in my bed! Waiting for me to see. W..T..F. I promptly gave it to our dog for the chewing.

Present day.. I am driving home from work (the Sunday before Christmas) and an Opossum walks across my path in my apartment complex parking lot. Naturally, I screamed my head off. I get into my apartment and EVERYONE is in my living room that came to visit and the first thing I said was 'I just saw a Opossum in the parking lot' Everyone laughs at me. Seriously..like really hard.

On Christmas one of my gifts was a FREAKING stuffed Opossum. My mother thought it would be really cute to give me a Opossum hence the chuckling when I came home from work that Sunday. Oh.. so it didn't end there.

For the past few weeks my mother has been posting the following pictures on my Facebook page.

That crazy lady aka my mother took pictures of that FREAKING Opossum all over my apartment and she has been posting them slowly on my Facebook page with stalker like messages. Seriously..this is my life.

Happy Thursday!

  1. Excellent! Your mom is awesome! And I agree...Possums are pretty freaky looking. I actually have a photo of an opossum playing dead because I really thought it was playing but it turns out it REALLY was DEAD!

  2. OMG that is so flippin' cool! Your mom IS awesome hahahaha!

We had an Opossum that used to come to our back sliding glass door. I haven't see him for years, but man he was huge and those teeth are scary.

  3. Awww, I think that's great. Your mom sounds awesome! I've lived in several places with mice (even had one run across my bare foot - ew), so I get it. :)

  5. Haha! This is the kind of thing I would totally do! Your mom is genius! I know what you mean about rodents though-- totally can't stand them. I had mice in my first apartment in Baltimore and it got to the point that I finally moved. I just could deal!

  10. Omg your mom is so mean! It's funny. But mean. Also, I too am traumatized by opossums (and all rodents) and almost couldn't look at these photos! Haha. When I was little, they would come to our porch to eat cat food we had set out. We stopped putting the cat food on the porch. Once my dad had to kill one too. Oh I just got the willies.

And that's also one of the reasons I've never moved to New York...because every person I've known who's lived there had mice in their apts, and I could not deal with that. There are some buildings that have them in DC too, but I don't think it's as common. Oh Ayla, I feel your pain.

  11. I can't stand rodents of any kind. I'm the one who jumps on a chair screaming when I see a mouse. My family finally quit giving me "mouse" gifts when they realized how upset it made me!

  12. I'm with you I hate opossums! They come through our yard all the time, and scare the crap out of me because they are bigger then my dog. Being a city girl, when we moved to the suburbs I have seen lots of crazy creatures and bugs.
